AMERICANISM

We Do Flags!

The VFW and its Auxiliary actively participates in community events and strongly supports maintaining a patriotic presence in the community. As such, this often involves the United States flag and emphasizing loyalty to our flag. We have the following ongoing programs to support this endeavor:

  • We place over 1500 flags in veterans’ grave markers of 12 county cemeteries. The flags are inserted in May before Memorial Day, and are removed after Labor Day in September. Flags that are tattered are then properly burned; those that are in good condition are recycled and distributed to area schools and organizations who use them for various veterans’ programs, often on Veterans Day in November.

  • We collect old tattered flags in 6 community locations in large red, white and blue boxes; these flags are then properly burned. These locations include Gaylord City Hall lobby on M32, Lowes by Customer Service, Ace Hardware by the checkout counters, Gilroys by their new flag display, Tractor Supply near the front door, and in the Otsego County Library near the front window.
  • We sell new flags as a Post fundraiser providing 9 sizes from 3' X 5' to 10' X 30'.  Please share the attached order form with friends and family, or local businesses to help support this endeavor.

These activities support Americanism in  our community and encourage everyone to be a dedicated citizen.
